The Woden region was the first ‘satellite city’ of Canberra to be built, and was established in the 1960s. Incorporating a major shopping centre, known as Woden Plaza, a number of Commonwealth Government departments and the Canberra Hospital, Woden consists of 12 suburbs and is also home to a large diplomatic community.

Back indoors, Woden Valley has its own shopping centre. Lovett Tower and several other buildings host staff from Australian Government agencies; there is also some light industrial development in the town centre and the Canberra Institute of Technology is here too.
Woden Valley is at the forefront of sporting life in Canberra, not only boasting countless sporting teams and associations, but also numerous sporting fields and facilities dotted throughout the region. Head on down to one of the many ovals for a game of cricket, rugby, soccer or AFL!
Looking to immerse yourself in the great outdoors? Delve into Isaacs Ridge on one of the many walking and cycling tracks and keep your eyes peeled for the native wildlife that call the ridge home. Pack a picnic and spend the day in complete relaxation with shady trees overhead, lush grass beneath you and birdsong not far away. If you’re feeling a little more athletic, hike to the peak of Isaacs Ridge and take in the panoramic views of the valley and mountains that stretch out before you.
Within the district are a number of facilities including the Phillip campus of the Canberra College (a secondary school catering to years 11 and 12), Marist College (a well-known all boys school, Melrose High School, Garran Primary, Torrens Primary, Mawson Primary, Sacred Heart and Sts Peter and Paul Primary School.
There is also a library, the Woden Youth Centre, and the Canberra Hospital, which is located in the north of the district.
